In-depth guide

Everything we coordinate in Toulon harbour & Mont Faron.

Toulon hosted the first French navy and remains its largest military port. The Naval Museum, the harbour tour by boat (essential to grasp the scale), the daily fish market — Toulon offers a more authentic urban experience than the Var beach towns. Le Mourillon, the city's fashionable district, lines the coastline with small beaches and lively restaurant terraces.

Mont Faron (584m), accessible by gondola from Super-Toulon, dominates the city and offers a panorama from the Saintes-Maries islands to the Saint-Tropez peninsula. On clear days, you can see Corsica. The Memorial of the Allied Landings of Provence sits at the summit. The drive up is also possible by car via narrow winding roads.

Saint-Mandrier, on the peninsula closing the harbour, offers more confidential creeks: La Coudoulière, Cavalas, Les Sablettes. The hilly coastal path from Cavalas to the lighthouse takes 2-3h with panoramic views. La Seyne-sur-Mer, on the other side of the harbour, offers Tamaris Bay and its Belle Époque villas, and the Janas forest for hiking.

The Toulon calanques (Petit and Grand Mugel, Méjean), accessible by boat from the harbour, complete the offering. Often less crowded than those of Cassis or Bandol, they offer pure swims in deep water and pier-side lunches at La Seyne.

Frequently asked questions

Our answers about Toulon harbour & Mont Faron.

Is Toulon worth a stay?

Yes — for those wanting to combine city, beaches, military and maritime heritage. Less glamorous than Saint-Tropez, more authentic. Ideal for 2-3 days off-peak, or as a base to discover the central Var coast.

Mont Faron — gondola or car?

Gondola for the view going up (rapid ascent, panoramic windows). Car for flexibility, but the road is narrow and winding. Combine: gondola up, hike back down (2h, marked trail).

Where to eat in Toulon?

Le Mourillon for terraces by the sea, around Place de la Liberté for night life. The Sextant on the harbour for fish, La Maison Saint Louis for refined cuisine. We book at the right time.

Train accessible?

Yes. Toulon TGV station, 4h from Paris, in the city centre. Public transport (boat-bus, buses, gondola) covers most of the city. A car remains useful for Saint-Mandrier and the surrounding calanques.
