The Giens peninsula concentrates exceptional wind conditions: mistral on the western beach (Almanarre), thermal sea breeze on the eastern beach (Tour Fondue). Flat shallow water, perfect for learning. World championship venue. Famous spots: Almanarre, La Capte, Brutal Beach (Six-Fours).
Our partner kiteschools are certified VDWS or IKO and provide modern equipment (Cabrinha, Duotone, North, F-One kites; Slingshot, North boards). Wing foil is rapidly growing too — easier to learn, more accessible to families.
Best season: April to October. The mistral blows mostly in spring and autumn (more reliable winds). Summer relies on the thermal sea breeze that picks up around 1pm and lasts until 6-7pm. 30-35°C in July-August + 18-22°C water = ideal conditions.

Top spots in Var
Three main spots to know:
- L'Almanarre (Giens peninsula, west side): the European reference. Flat shallow water, strong mistral. World championship venue. Best in spring and autumn.
- La Capte (Giens, east side): thermal breeze in summer, smaller crowd, calmer water. Family-friendly.
- Brutal Beach (Six-Fours-les-Plages): more relaxed atmosphere, summer thermal. Good intermediate spot.
- Cap Nègre (Lavandou): in certain wind directions only. Wild coast, less crowded.
Almanarre is busy in season — start early or late to avoid the queues for launch.
When to come and what to bring
Wind forecast tips:
- Check Windguru, Windy, or Météo France 'plage' forecast 2-3 days ahead.
- Mistral typically blows 15-25 knots, sometimes more. Thermal breeze typically 12-18 knots.
- Allow 5-7 days for a learning week — you need wind days, and not every day delivers.
Bring: swimwear (or wetsuit in May/October), sun cream, water shoes (the launch can be pebbly), water bottle. The school provides wetsuit, harness, helmet, kite, board, vest.
